This is an informative meeting to discuss and answer questions regarding the new permit required to harvest saw palmetto berries. This will also be an educational workshop on the industry, opportunity to meet and network with government representatives, fellow land owners, harvesters, buyers and industry leaders. Everyone is welcome to attend. The Florida Dept of Agriculture will be accepting completed forms at this meeting. Saw Palmetto Market LLC is located in Central Florida. We specialize in harvesting and buying saw palmetto berries during the season usually between the months of August - November.
Growing & Harvesting
Saw Palmetto Market LLC works with its clients to help them produce healthier and larger crops. A controlled burn in areas that are safe to do so can more then double the harvest of berries. In its natural habitat, the growth of saw palmettos is encouraged by fires during the growing season. We also bring in honey bees to help with pollination. Bees and insects pollinate fragrant white saw palmetto flowers that grow on stalked clusters. The flowers bloom from early spring through early summer, producing small green fruits turning yellow and ripening to 1-inch-wide, black fruits, in early fall. A saw palmetto will yield between 100 to 500 berries in mid to late June, after which the yield declines until the middle of October.
We genrally start to harvest the Palmetto berries in Mid August as they become ripe, and move north across the state. However like any other fruit, it is not uncommon for some areas to ripen sooner or later than others. The berries can fall off and a crop could be lost if not checked on frequently and harvested on time. All harvesting is done manually as there is no machine made to pick the berries. The ripe berries are gathered and brought out of the woods in bags and weighted on site. They will be transported to a processing facility where they will be washed and dried for further processing.
Saw Palmetto Market LLC is fully licensed and Insured. We buy ripe Palmetoo Berries from land owners and pickers. We are also seeking leases with land owners to harvest their berries for the 2019 season. State certified scales at our buying stations and mobile scales are available to come to your location.
